Maryland transgender bill gets derailed in Senate, is apparently killed!

Hard work by small band of activists paid off

POSTED: April 2, 2010

As we reported last week, a radical transgender rights bill passed the Maryland House despite a tireless and heroic lobbying battle in the State House by a handful of pro-family activists, with help from MassResistance. But it looks like their hard work paid off.

The homosexual lobby was hoping to get it passed by the Senate and signed by the Governor by April 11, when the Maryland legislative session ends. But it appears the Senate leadership has had enough!

Almost immediately after the bill got to the Senate, the Senate President placed the bill in the "Rules Committee," which we've been told is considered a graveyard for controversial bills, and announced it was unlikely to be taken out.

As the Baltimore Sun reported on their blog:

The move presents a formidable procedural hurdle for the effort with less than two weeks left of session. There would have to be a brief hearing in the Rules Committee to determine the proper policy committee assignment. Then the policy committee would need to hear the bill before it could reach the Senate floor.

Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller said that his chamber is engaged with the budget now and is unlikely to take up the bill.

"When we are through with the budget we'll have time to deal with other issues that might have a chance of passage," he said after the morning session. "At this point in time I'd say the chances of passage of that bill are next to none."

According to pro-family activists, this is a clear indication that the Senate President has intended to kill the bill.  Nevertheless, the homosexual lobby has said that they will continue to lobby for it right to the end, so our side is going to stay vigilant.

One of the pro-family activists sent this email to MassResistance right after the Senate president's action:

We are still praying; still working hard. Four of us were up there last night lobbying with some really great conversations!! Of course the Equality MD people were out there in full force. Gave all the Republicans your pics to get them fired up against this bill. (Dems to follow).

This is really great news !!!

Once again, I really can't thank you enough for all your help and moral support.

We're glad we could be part of the fight. MassResistance will continue to help around the country in any way we can.
